Our Story
In 1996, Fertile Garden Center opened in a small hoop house with a few hundred flowers and vegetables. Today we grow over 50,000 plants in 21,000 square feet of greenhouse space.
Elizabeth and Howard founded Fertile Garden Center with a love for plants as well as their customers. Elizabeth began her horticulture career at a young age, buying her first flower shop/greenhouse when she was just 21. Years later, after selling her first shop and taking time off, she knew she needed to get back in. With the greenhouse growing Howard "retired" from their other family business to help full time. The business has always been a family business with Howard and Elizabeth and their children Sam, Josie and their spouses Shawna and Scott. They are proud of how Fertile Garden Center grew from its modest beginnings into the thriving family business that it is today!
Elizabeth and Howard's son, Sam, bought the greenhouse in 2021 with his wife Shawna. Raised in Fertile, Sam wants to keep, "The Flower City" true to its name. Sam is a self-proclaimed plant nerd who studied diseases, insects, and all sorts of other plant stuff. Shawna is the newest member to the crew. She has found the greenhouse to be a fun place to work with the ever changing environment.
The Haugen family shares a love for flowers and for their customers. Elizabeth and Howard can still be found helping around the greenhouse on a daily basis. They love the work, especially keeping Sam on his toes.
